Joseph C. Kolars, MD, MACP

Dr. Kolars is a physician, educator, and global health leader currently serving as director of strategic development for Global Collaboration at the University of Michigan (U-M) Medical School. With a career spanning more than four decades, he has held numerous academic and administrative roles, including professorships in medicine, learning health sciences, public health, and nursing, as well as leadership positions at the Mayo Clinic and in China. Dr. Kolars has been instrumental in advancing medical education globally, notably through his work with the U-M–Peking University Joint Institute and in Africa through U-M’s Center for Global Health Equity. His clinical expertise lies in gastroenterology, hepatology, and internal medicine, while his research focuses on medical education quality, competency-based learning, and strengthening health systems in low-resource settings. Widely published and internationally recognized, Dr. Kolars has received numerous honors, including the Abraham Flexner Award for Distinguished Service to Medical Education and Mastership in the American College of Physicians.
